The Shortz! Film Festival is an annual international short film festival in Chico, California showcasing the best and brightest short films from around the globe. The festival accepts and screens short films with running times of 30 minutes or less in any genre.

Created by local filmmakers from Chico, California, Shortz! was started with the desire to bring film makers together in a fun and funky environment, to meet and network with the ultimate goal of producing more films.

It is with a heavy heart and much deliberation that we have decided to put the festival on hiatus until further notice.

The time has come!

"The time has come," the Walrus said,
"To talk of many things:
Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax--
Of cabbages--and kings--
And why the sea is boiling hot--
And whether pigs have wings." Jabberwocky - Lewis Carroll

Well, in our case the time has come for some amazing short films, prize raffles, good friends (old and new), great food and FREE popcorn.

The 5th Annual Shortz! Film Festival launches tonight and continues through Sunday. The festival schedule can be found here, so you can plan your day with us. Call for Volunteers

Volunteer Image

The Shortz! Fest is putting out the call to dependable friends of the festival! How can you help? Glad you asked.

We need help with the daily work during the festival and the Thursday night market booth. The festival is September 18th 19th and 20th and the Thursday night market boot will run every Thursday Night (duh) starting on August 27th and ending September 17th.  We also need assistance putting up posters a couple of weeks before the festival.

During the festival, we need people to operate the ticket booth, the raffle table, to check tickets at the door, to collect and tally voting ballots, and whatever else comes up. For the Thursday night market nights, we need people to help with set up and tear down of the booth, assist in the booth by handing out flyers and answering simple questions about the film festival. Each shift is only about three and a half hours long, give or take.

What do you get out of it? You get a weekend pass to the festival, that is worth $20 right there. You get FREE popcorn. You get to be part of a very cool Film Festival. You get to meet people from all over the county and the world who attend.  Plus you gain our undying love and respect ... because you know you can't buy love or respect. LOL Take a look at the chart below and let us know when you can help. Contact us at info@shortzfilmfest.com.

The Shortz! Film Fest Keeps Getting Better!!

The other day, someone asked me, "So, at your little film festival, do you show like a dozen films or something like that?" I was like "Ya, right".

Back in 2011, the first year of the Shortz! Film Fest, we showed thirty films at the Cabaret theater. We thought that this wasn't bad for a first year film festival. Now we are in our fifth year, and we have doubled our original number. That's right, do the math. The 2015 Shortz! Film Fest line up will include SIXTY films, plus and hour of favorite films from past years. That is five dozen plus films dude and dudettes. Back in 2011 we had three judges, now in our fifth year, again multiply by five, we have FIFTEEN judges critiquing this years films. Judges that are industry professionals such as producers, writers, actors, and film reviewers from all over the country.

And now we would like to multiply our audience by a factor of five. Let's pack the El Rey Theater in Chico California, on September 18th, 19th, and 20th. Make your plans now to join us. Tickets are on sale now at CHICOTIX.COM. Twenty dollars gets you the entire weekend, that works out to three films for a buck! And don't forget, FREE POPCORN!

It's Out Of The Bag!

Our deepest thanks and some BIG news!

Our call for entries is officially closed, but we wanted to just take a moment to send our deepest and most sincere thank you to all of the filmmakers that submitted films. We received over 100 entries again this season and you've made our job even harder with the amazing quality of work. We should have our lineup decided and acceptance letters delivered within a few weeks. But now you may be asking yourself, "What if my film isn't chosen to screen? Am I just flushing my money down the commode ?!"
As filmmakers ourselves, we feel (and have felt for years) your pain in the pocket book, so.......
Starting this season, whether your film is selected or not, your paid submission gets you a single full weekend pass to the festival!! (more details to come later) That's a $20 value, which - if we're doing the math right - means that the filmmakers who submitted early are actually getting money back! Consider it our way of thanking you for your continued support of our festival.
So, please come to Chico and spend the weekend with us and dozens of other filmmakers from around the world for three days of films and fun.
Thanks again!!!
