A short film on how light pollution affects the view of the night sky. It shows how the view gets progressively better as the light pollution reduces (from Los Angeles to Great Basin desert).

Thanks to darksitefinder.com on finding the locations. Traveling and shooting at every level of light pollution was a challenge. Furthermore, I was mostly alone in some of the locations, which is a bit scary because of the presence of wildlife (bear, mountain lion, snake). Despite the challenge, I was awestruck by the beauty of night sky at very less polluted areas.

Most of us live under heavily light polluted skies, and some people have never even seen the Milky Way. During a 1994 blackout, L.A. residents called the observatories when they saw the Milky Way for the first time. Although we can't imagine popular cities like L.A. and Manhattan almost dark upon nightfall, we can limit the light pollution specially the sky glow. Sky glow is the result of light directed upward instead of where it is most useful: on streets and homes. Thus most of a city’s artificial light is wasted anyway.

We are losing our connection with the night sky, which provided us with wonders like Stonehenge, the Pyramids of Giza and the Mayan calendar. It also keeps our overworked, politicized lives simple, and makes us kind, thoughtful. Astronomer Neil deGrasse Tyson said: “When you look at the night sky, you realize how small we are within the cosmos,” “It’s kind of resetting of your ego. To deny yourself that state of mind, either willingly or unwittingly, is to not live to the full extent of what it is to be human.”

Lost in Light, a short film on how light pollution affects the view of the night skies. Shot mostly in California, the movie shows how the view gets progressively better as you move away from the lights. Finding locations to shoot at every level of light pollution was a challenge and getting to the darkest skies with no light pollution was a journey in itself. Here’s why I think we should care more.

The night skies remind us of our place in the Universe. Imagine if we lived under skies full of stars. That reminder we are a tiny part of this cosmos, the awe and a special connection with this remarkable world would make us much better beings - more thoughtful, inquisitive, empathetic, kind and caring. Imagine kids growing up passionate about astronomy looking for answers and how advanced humankind would be, how connected and caring we’d feel with one another, how noble and adventurous we’d be. How compassionate with fellow species on Earth and how one with Nature we’d feel. Imagine a world where happiness of the soul is more beautiful. Ah, I feel so close to inner peace. I can only wonder how my and millions of other lives would have changed.

But in reality, most of us live under heavily light polluted skies and some have never even seen the Milky Way. We take the skies for granted and are rather lost in our busy lives without much care for the view of the stars.

How does light pollution affect the night skies and quite possibly our lives?

A young man, shaped by generations of his family’s connection with its land, and the nearly extinct plants that reside within, tracks down someone trespassing on his property. When he is charmed by this sassy, young woman intruder, his protectiveness quickly melts away, so much so, that he shares with her the transcendent flowers and his deepest secret. He will be the one breaking the four generation chain of stewardship. “The world is warming, and my inheritance is running out of time.”

They meet again, by chance, in a grocery store, and this time she pushes herself into his life. Her charisma and wit weaken his resolve, and he accepts her invitation to dinner. When she offers a toast “to monastic life,” he reels back, disappointed that she really doesn’t understand. But then she softly and succinctly lays bare his soul, while also questioning his resolve not to have children.

She deserves an explanation, so he uses part of their dinner as a canvass to expose how the complexity of climate change has to abide by a basic and universal biological principle. One that seems to be entirely missing in the public discourse. Together, they poignantly expose this thesis, until she despairs about whether all is lost. “Actually,” he says, “I think global warming is our best hope.” He goes on to explain why, and she falls in love in that moment.

With two good bottles of wine to lubricate their imaginations, they tipsily exchange creative solutions to the greenhouse gas problem. One bizarre contrivance triggers an idea, a crazy leap of faith that subsequently gets set into motion. When they meet again, this time for a picnic on his property, the pendulum has begun to swing, and it will crash into their lives, and reshape the entire world. “We are going to be so happy.” Will they be?
