Since it was founded, thirty-two years ago by Jorg Rupf , St. George Spirits has grown from a one man operation, with a bare bones production facility jerry-rigged on saw horses, to a 65,000 square-foot hanger space, with a tasting room, laboratory, and line up of the most beautiful pot stills you may ever see. The people at St. George Spirits are linked by their passion for both the art and craft of distillation—and their desire to say something new through the language of distillery. St. George Spirits was the first distillery in the United States to legally produce Absinthe after the U.S. ban was lifted in 2007. They have a main line of Gins and they also distil Bourbon, Single Malt Whiskey, Rum, Fruit Brandies, Fruit Liqueurs, Coffee Liqueur, and other Kindered Spirits, all of them superb. Some of the Shortz! Film Festival coordinators took a trip down to Alameda to visit the St. George Spirits distillery, in May of this year, and we had a blast. The Distillery is housed in an old air-plane hanger on the vacated Alameda Naval Air Station, The tasting tour was highly entertaining and educational, and well worth the $15.00 price tag. The next time you visit the San Francisco bay area, plan on stopping by, you'll be glad you did.

All of us here at Shortz are simply stunned at yesterday morning’s news report of the death of Robin Williams. I think a lot of us are still in a state of shock and denial, unwilling to accept that he is really gone. He was such an ingrained presence in the last 30 years of American culture it seems unbelievable that he won’t be with us anymore. His life and work affected so many people, and he nearly singlehandedly created 3 generations of comedians and filmmakers.
As one of his characters stated, “Carpe. Hear it? Carpe. Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary.” (John Keating, Dead Poets Society) so he lived.
We are forever in your debt, Mr. Williams, and we already miss you terribly.
We are excited to announce that Jungle Software, makers of some really cool, really helpful software, have joined the Shortz! Fest as a sponsor! Jungle Software produces filmmaking software that helps filmmakers do everything related to their project, from script writing, to story boarding, to cast managing to budgeting. Imagine a single application to handle your entire film project, it's all in one package. Jungle Software is donating two copies of Chimpanzee ($129.00 value each) to the festival. Chimpanzee is a production management software package that is just perfect for the short filmmaker. Do you need to make call sheets for your cast? Need to schedule your shots for the day? Need to create a story board? Need to manage your props and set dressing? Chimpanzee handles it all for you. It even helps you stay on budget! But that's not all, Jungle Software is also donating a copy of Koala Call Sheets ($49 value). With Koala Call Sheets you can set your daily schedule, choose the cast and crew that your will need on set, set your times for everything from breakfast, to the last shot of the day, organize the props you will need and more. Then you can email the call sheets to the crew right through Koala. You will be so organized you won't know what to do with yourself!
We will be raffling off these software packages at the Fest, which gives you another great reason to come to the show! You could win! See you at the Shortz Film Festival, September 12th, 13th, and 14th at the El Rey Theater in Downtown Chico.
